The Abbey of San Claudio al Chienti in Corridonia is of very old origins and it’s undoubtedly one of the most important Romanesque buildings in the Marche. It presents a wide façade between two cylindrical towers. The parish church of San Claudio al Chienti, built near the ancient Pausulae, should be considered an abbey even though in the 12th century documents of the Fermo episcopate it is defined as a parish church. Its originality is linked to the Palatine model of Germanic inspiration known as Doppelkapelle, i.e. a double superimposed church. The exterior is a sort of cube-shaped box from which only the two cylindrical stair towers and the apses protrude. The apses and the sides are decorated with typical Romanesque hanging arches and pilasters that are not entirely original. The square and perfectly matching floor plans of the two churches are connected externally by the 13th century stairway. The present layout is the result of a series of interventions that were carried out between the 12th and the 19th centuries for the structural reinforcement of the building, that were responsible for significant style refurbishments of windows and decorative elements.
