Descrizione

It is the youngest nature reserve in the Marche region, established in 2009. The area covers about 1500 hectares between the municipalities of San Severino, Matelica, Apiro and Gagliole, in the province of Macerata.
The species that dominates in terms of extension and beauty throughout the reserve is the beech. In the wooded areas of both mountains there are huge beech woods, suggestive and a destination for many photography enthusiasts.
The low, sturdy trunks open like umbrellas, with the crowns becoming the color of mahogany, pumpkin or new wine, distilled during this period. The sun’s rays filter softly through the thick foliage, creating a suspended atmosphere that seems to make the centuries-old age of many specimens tangible. Walking among these ancient natural relics, in the Monte Canfaito Reserve, you can come across the proudest of all: a beech tree about 500 years old, the largest specimen in all of the Marches, counted among the 300 monumental trees of Italy.
It is also very nice to walk among the beech woods of Mount San Vicino, which surround a good part of the path that leads to the top on which the famous iron cross is hoisted.
