Descrizione

The small lake of Palazzo Borghese is located in Montemonaco, a municipality in the Monti Sibillini National Park. It is located at an altitude of 1,786 meters. above sea level under the rocky slopes of Monte Palazzo Borghese inside a large karst-glacial basin. It is a splendid body of water that can only be reached on foot and is visible only between spring and early summer after the snow from the winter glaciers has melted. Its waters host the Sibyl’s Chirocephalus (“Chirocephalus Sibyllae”), a species similar to the more famous Marchesoni’s Chirocephalus (Chirocephalus Marchesonii) found in Lake Pilato. The few days of existence of the pond are sufficient for the Chirocephalus Sibyllae (gray and not orange like the other) to complete its life cycle.
