Descrizione

In the municipality of Pioraco it is possible to walk along Li Vurgacci: a simple and suggestive naturalistic path adjacent to the Potenza along the gorge carved by the river.
In the village of Pioraco it is the water that designs the landscape, the urban structure and the history with the centenary paper mills present.
The path of Li Vurgacci can be traveled from April to October: a series of wooden walkways lead visitors along the path whose path of about 500 meters can be covered in less than 1 hour. Sneakers with a non-smooth sole are recommended, given the humidity and the often slippery ground. The scenario that awaits the tourist is very suggestive: there are spectacular waterfalls, whirlpools, travertine walls, Roman remains and underground caves, the latter only passable by speleologists.

One of the attractions of this path is the pit of the monsters, a sort of small natural square where the local sculptor Antonio Ciccarelli has carved enormous “terrifying” faces on the rock.

There are three ways to reach the path of li Vurgacci, two rather simple and one more panoramic.

1) Passing directly from the center of Pioraco there is a neo-Gothic style aedicule, the route begins right behind it and not well signposted.

2) From paper mills. The route begins 800 meters before arriving in the village, from the paper mills. The directions are easy to follow.

3) The panoramic route from the Madonna della Grotta. This route is slightly more demanding as you reach the path starting from the sanctuary of the Madonna della Grotta, just outside the town of Pioraco. Here too the path is well marked, trekking shoes are recommended. The uphill route offers a beautiful view of Pioraco.
